Call, email, tweet City Council and the Mayor to pass Emergency Paid Sick Leave for Working People!

Toolkit powered by 215 People’s Alliance, the Coalition for Restaurant Safety and Health, and El Comité de Trabajadorxs.

Background Info

Councilmember Kendra Brooks is putting forward another COVID-19 Emergency Paid Sick Leave bill! As it stands right now, this bill (#22051) would allow workers to take up to 40 hours of paid leave, which would be available for use immediately to recover from COVID-19 or care for a sick family member if they work in a business with 10 or more employees. This is different from the city’s paid sick leave law that requires time to be accrued. In addition to potentially being a (small) win for workers, this could also be an important opportunity to let a lot of potential mayoral candidates know who we are and what our demands are. We need to let city council and the mayor know that we want to push this forward! Sign the petition here.

The Next Public Comment Opportunity will be, February 17th, 2022

Hello. My name is [name] and I am a [restaurant worker, grocery store worker, member of 215 People’s Alliance, Philadelphia resident etc…] in [neighborhood].

I’m calling to ask for your support for the Emergency Paid Sick Leave for businesses with 10 or more employees by Councilwoman Kendra Brook. Give workers the very basic protection we need to take off when we are sick with COVID-19.

Plug in Your Reason Here (or use the language below):

We as workers need to heal, get vaccinated, take care of family members, quarantine and NOT work when we are sick! Most workers live paycheck to paycheck. Without paid sick leave, we are forced to work even if we have COVID-19, which includes handling your food and bagging your groceries. If we want to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and keep Philadelphians healthy and thriving we need Emergency Paid Sick Leave now!

Dear ___________,

I am reaching out to you as a [restaurant worker, grocery store worker, Philadelphia resident. member of 215 People’s Alliance etc…]. I urge you to support the Emergency Paid Sick Leave bill for businesses with 10 or more employees by Councilwoman Kendra Brooks to give workers our very basic protection to take off when we are sick with COVID-19.

Plug in Your Reason Here (or use the language below):

For Workers: We as workers need to heal, get vaccinated, take care of family members, quarantine and NOT work when we are sick!

We need Emergency Paid Sick Leave to keep businesses open safely, and ensure that we can afford to stay home when sick. Workers in small businesses also need this protection. Many restaurants are small businesses with small staffs, and many of us restaurant workers are at very high risk of contracting COVID-19. We deserve the same protections for the same work!

Please support  bill #22051 for Emergency Paid Sick Leave.

Sincerely,

[name]

For Owners: I support the Emergency Paid Sick Leave bill for businesses with 10 or more employees, as I believe that all workers should have paid time to heal, get vaccinated, take care of family members, quarantine and NOT work when sick! It is responsible and essential to provide paid sick leave to keep staff healthy and safe. As a small business owner, I believe it is the City of Philadelphia’s responsibility to ensure that no business experiences financial difficulty or ruin in order to provide paid sick leave. At times, businesses have to close completely in order to stop the spread of COVID-19, with no money being made, and requests from all staff to pay them what they deserve for their time out of work, this can be a massive financial strain. In order to stop the spread, we need safety nets for all workers and the small businesses that employ them.

Please support  bill #22051 for Emergency Paid Sick Leave by Councilwoman Kendra Brooks.

Sincerely,

[name] [business]
